Archaeologists Find 40 Beheaded Roman Skeletons With Skulls Between Their Legs

Archaeologists Find 40 Beheaded Roman Skeletons With Skulls Between Their Legs

Archaeologists discovered 425 corpses in a late Roman cemetery in southern England, including about 40 decapitated skeletons.

The find was uncovered by a team of roughly 50 archaeologists during a dig near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, on the route of the multi-billion pound high-speed train connection that is presently under construction, according to HS2.

Around 10% of the corpses had their heads cut off. Many people sat with their heads between their legs or adjacent to their feet.

Although beheading was a “common, if marginal, burial ritual” throughout the late Roman period, archaeologists believe that one interpretation is that the severed bones were criminals or outcasts.

The unearthed remains will be studied by the experts over the following several years, providing an opportunity to learn more about Roman civilization’s past habits, diets, and values.

“All human bones discovered will be treated with dignity, care, and respect, and our findings will be shared with the public,” said Helen Wass, HS2 Ltd’s head of heritage.

The crew also discovered over 1,200 coins, as well as various lead weights, showing that this was a trade and business location.

Spoons, pins, and brooches were discovered, as well as game dice and bells, indicating that gambling and religious activities took place there as well.

From 43 until 410 CE, the Romans controlled Britain.

“The excavation is noteworthy in that it allows for a clear characterisation of this Roman town as well as a study of many of its people,” stated Richard Brown, COPA’s Senior Project Manager.

Since the building of the HS2 line from London to Birmingham began in 2018, more than 100 archaeological sites have been discovered.

Through their excavation efforts, archaeologists have been able to find a wealth of information about life in Roman Britain about two thousand years ago.
