What would happen if aliens attack the Earth? Most probably, all the world powers would unite to fight against them. That’s what Ronald Reagan said to Mikhail Gorbachev privately during the 1985 Geneva Summit. President Reagan is fairly known for his UFO sightings and incredible remarks on extraterrestrials. He tried several times to tell the world that aliens exist.
President Reagan served as the president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. He had two UFO sightings. One of them is well-documented, while the other account lacks an exact date and location. In 1988, American TV host and comedian Steve Allen disclosed that Reagan and his wife Nancy arrived 30 minutes late at a party in Hollywood as they spotted a UFO coming down the coast.

Reagan’s other incident is more convincing. In the summer of 1974, when Reagan was governor of California, he had the most dramatic UFO encounter. He was flying in a Cessna private jet when he noticed a big light following the airplane at 35,000 feet. He immediately alerted the pilot, Bill Paynter. Later, the pilot revealed that the UFO followed them for half a mile but took off when they tried to move closer to it for a better view.

Reagan said: “It was zigzagging around. I went up to the pilot and said, ‘Have you seen anything like that before?’ He was shocked and said, ‘Nope.’ And I said to him: ‘Let’s follow it!’ We followed it for several minutes… to Bakersfield, and all of a sudden, to our utter amazement,t it went straight up into the heavens.” This statement was confirmed by Norman Charles Miller, who was chief of the Journal’s Washington bureau at the time.
In the book “Landslide: The Unmaking of the President (1988)”, author Jane Mayer described how the UFO sighting impacted Reagan. Soon after the incident, he told his wife about the encounter, and they initiated personal research into the matter. They went through ancient Egyptian texts and hieroglyphics, where they found spectacular information about flying saucers and other extraterrestrial activities. From the Egyptian reference known as the “Tulli Papyrus“, they learned about the UFO incident that reportedly occurred during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III, 1450 BC.
Things got much more serious for Reagan when he became president. The world was passing through a very tense period as the Cold War was in full swing. The two great nuclear powers, the US and the Soviet Union, were fighting proxy wars. Both nations continued developing more nuclear arsenals, which led to the Geneva Summit being held in 1985. The meeting was conducted to discuss and improve diplomatic relations between the two powers.
Among all the talks, speeches, and meetings, the main attraction of the Summit was when Reagan met Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. The two began accusing each other of their respective actions, but at one point they stopped talking, took a break, and had a private walk together. Every reporter at the site was watching them with keen eyes. Unfortunately, no one could find out what they were talking about until years later.
During an interview with Charlie Rose, Gorbachev recalled: “From the fireside house, President Reagan suddenly said to me, ‘What would you do if someone from outer space suddenly attacked the United States? Would you help us?’ I said, ‘No doubt about it.’ He said, ‘We too.’ So that’s interesting. I’m sorry for having interrupted you, but it was an interesting moment.”
President Reagan made several remarks about the “alien threat” in his speeches from 1985 to 1988. In one of his speeches to the UN, he spoke about how humanity’s differences might disappear if the world faced a threat from outside Earth.
In his September 1987 address to the United Nations General Assembly, Reagan said he sometimes wondered how quickly differences around the world would disappear if humanity faced an “alien threat from outside this world.” Reagan used the scenario as an argument about human unity and went on to identify war and the threat of war as the real “alien force” already confronting humanity.
Nearly 40 Years Later, Secret U.S. Space Weapons Are Already in Orbit
Nearly four decades after Reagan publicly spoke about space defense and used the idea of an extraterrestrial threat to imagine nations putting aside their differences, the United States has now made a remarkable disclosure about its military capabilities in space.
On September 14, 2026, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink revealed that the U.S. Space Force already has what he described as “on-orbit space control weapons” capable of defending American forces against hostile adversary action.

Meink did not identify the weapons, explain how they work, say when they were deployed, or disclose whether they are kinetic or non-kinetic systems. In other words, the public does not know whether these weapons are capable of physically damaging another object in space or whether they use other methods to disrupt or disable a target.
According to Fox News, officials have also declined to disclose details about how the systems operate. The secrecy means it is not publicly known exactly how long these weapons have been in orbit or what their full capabilities are.
The disclosure comes as the United States increasingly focuses on military competition in space. American officials have repeatedly pointed to growing space and counterspace capabilities from China and Russia, and Meink specifically described the new orbital systems as a way of defending U.S. forces against hostile adversary action.
There is currently no public evidence that these weapons were developed to counter an extraterrestrial threat. The military’s stated concern is hostile activity from human adversaries.
Still, the timing creates an interesting historical connection to Reagan’s remarks.
Reagan launched the Strategic Defense Initiative in 1983, a futuristic missile-defense research program widely known as “Star Wars.” Two years later, he discussed with Gorbachev the hypothetical possibility of the United States being attacked by someone from outer space. Then, in 1987, he stood before the United Nations and again imagined humanity facing an “alien threat from outside this world.”
Now, nearly 40 years later, the United States has publicly acknowledged that secret American weapons are already operating in orbit.
That does not mean Reagan’s remarks and today’s weapons are directly connected. Reagan’s alien scenario was presented as a hypothetical argument about global unity, while current officials say the orbital systems are intended to defend U.S. forces against hostile adversaries.
But one mystery remains: the government has not revealed exactly what these space weapons are or everything they are capable of doing.
Are these systems designed solely for threats posed by adversaries on Earth, or could space-defense technology eventually be used against threats coming from somewhere beyond Earth? For now, there is no evidence of the latter, and much about America’s newly acknowledged orbital arsenal remains classified.
Interestingly, during a special screening of “ET: The Extra-Terrestrial” at the White House in 1982, Reagan whispered to Steven Spielberg that everything shown in the movie was real. It was confirmed by Spielberg while giving an interview to Quint (aka Eric Vespe). Spielberg said: “No, he wasn’t ushered out of the room. He was the President of the United States! Nobody could usher Ronald Reagan out of the room! It was in the White House screening room, and Reagan got up to thank me for bringing the film to show the President, the First Lady, and all of their guests, which included Sandra Day O’Connor in her first week as a Justice of the Supreme Court, and it included some astronauts… I think Neil Armstrong was there; I’m not 100% certain, but it was an amazing, amazing evening.
He just stood up, and he looked around the room, almost like he was doing a headcount, and he said, “I wanted to thank you for bringing E.T. to the White House. We really enjoyed your movie,” and then he looked around the room and said, “And there are several people in this room who know that everything on that screen is absolutely true.”
Reagan was criticized for his bizarre comments on aliens; he was called an actor reading a script, but the truth is that they were his own words. In the following years, many officials in the White House hinted at the presence of outer world life. In 2016, leaked Podesta UFO emails explain that the White House is aware of aliens.
