Ancient Scythian “Amazon” Women Discovered In Russia Buried Alongside Their Weaponry

According to an announcement from Russia’s RAS Institute of Archeology, researchers have discovered the bones of four Amazons of various ages in the same tomb for the first time.

The remains date back to the second half of the 4th century BCE.

They discovered the bones of four ladies in a tomb built of clay and wood logs in Russia.

When she died, one was believed to be between the ages of 12 and 13, the other was between the ages of 20 and 29, the third was between the ages of 25 and 35, and the fourth was between the ages of 45 and 50.

From 200 and 900 BC, the Scythians were nomadic warrior tribes that roamed Siberia. And Amazons were Scythian military women, like those featured in the “Wonder Woman” film.

The bones are consistent with other recent findings, indicating that Amazons lived in Eastern Europe with other nomadic tribes.

This is the first well-preserved ceremonial headdress found in the Middle Don river belonging to a wealthy Scythian woman.

The researchers were able to date the burial of the bones to the 4th century BC because of the items discovered with them.

With the adolescent girl and one of the young ladies, iron arrowheads, a bird-shaped iron hook, horse harnesses, harness hooks, iron knives, animal bones, molded pots, and a broken black lacquer vase decorated with a red palmette were discovered. Grave robbers disturbed their section of the tomb in ancient times.

The tombs of the other young woman and the elder woman, on the other hand, were immaculate, resting on grass-covered wooden beds.

The young woman was buried like a “horseman,” a funeral custom that entails severing the tendons in the legs.

A bronze mirror was beneath her left shoulder, along with two spears and a glass bead bracelet on her left side and hand. Among her legs were two vessels: a molded dish with a black lacquer pattern and a one-armed drinking cup.

Aside from her age, the oldest woman surprised everyone. According to the experts, the average life expectancy of a Scythian lady was 30 to 35 years old. Her Calathes, or ceremonial headpiece, was adorned with flowery decorated plates and shaped pendants.

A reconstruction of the calathos headdress (left) depicts what the headdress may have looked like atop the woman’s head. The remains are shown on the right.

Her jewelry was 65-70 percent gold, with copper, silver, and iron added to make an alloy. Scythian jewelry is known for having a low gold content. She was also buried with a unique iron arrowhead with a forked point and an iron knife wrapped in cloth.

According to the experts, the headgear is a one-of-a-kind find since so few survived burial to be discovered by archaeologists. Rather than this well-preserved ceremonial hat with entire embellishments, other finds have yielded pieces.

The bones were discovered at the Devitsa V cemetery in the Voronezh area of Russia, which consists of 19 mounds and has been examined since 2010.

The bones of the four ladies were discovered in one of the mounds this year by the Don Archaeological Expedition of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Archeology.

“The Amazons are a typical Scythian occurrence,” said Valerii Guliaev, chairman of the Don expedition. “Over the last decade, our expedition has unearthed around 11 tombs of young armed women.”

“Separate barrows were dug for them, and all funeral ceremonies customarily performed for males were performed for women.”
